ABC News is reporting that Hillary Clinton's replacement might just be Caroline Kennedy!
Another Senator Kennedy? The crazy speculation about Hillary Clinton's Senate seat may not be so crazy after all. A Democrat who would know tells ABC News that New York governor David Paterson has talked to Caroline Kennedy about taking the seat, which was once held by her uncle, Robert F. Kennedy. It’s not exactly shocking that Paterson would reach out to one of the most highly respected public figures in New York, but this is: Sources say Kennedy is considering it, and has not ruled out coming to Washington to replace Hillary Clinton in the Senate.
A few years ago, the famously private Caroline Kennedy would be the last Kennedy expected to serve in Congress, but of course, she took on a much more high-profile role during the presidential campaign and, if she does it, would be more than New York’s junior Senator; she’d have closer ties to the Obama White House than any of her colleagues, a direct line to the East Wing.
More below the fold...
The short article continues with this nugget:
When Robert Kennedy, Jr. took himself out of the running for the seat earlier this week, he told Jonathan Hicks of the New York Times, "Caroline Kennedy would be the perfect choice if she would agree to it." And one more thing: We hear that President-elect Obama has made it clear that he thinks Caroline Kennedy would be a great choice.
Now, I'm not saying this had anything to do with it it -- I'm not that narcissistic -- but as soon as it looked like HRC was taking the SOS job, I wrote Gov. Patterson asking him to consider Caroline Kennedy as her replacement.
I wish I had a copy of that letter, but it was done through the Governor's website.
Basically, I said that the seat (for NY purposes) needed to be filled with someone who can walk into the Senate already a star and that someone well-respected and beloved as Caroline is, would command immediate respect from her colleagues and attention from the media in ways most junior Senators would dream of. An New York, at this time in history, must have that in their Senator.
Did anyone else think she'd be great for this position?
What do you other NYer's think?
UPDATE:
I have to leave for a couple of hours, so I won't be able to respond until I get back. But keep up the discussion! ;-)
UPDATE II (because of some of the comments I'm reading):
Caroline is a New Yorker through and through. She love this state, the city she live in and the people in it. She isn't a career politician as so many vying for the seat are. More than anyone else, she represents the change most of us around here have been fighting for, despite her family name, which in this case make a local Senator and national one. I for one don't want yet another politician-climbing insider, another microphone-grabbing Schumer talking the talk but not walking the walk filling HRC's seat. I want someone who will only care about one thing... the people.
