I'm just looking for some information about the rules related to the Democratic delegates for the 2008 election. Please provide answers if you can.
My questions are as follows:
- Can someone who has dropped out of the race (e.g., John Edwards) and who has (26) delegates committed to him free those delegates to vote for another candidate starting with the first vote at the convention? Or are they committed to vote for Edwards during the first vote?
- The total number of delegates (2025) needed to obtain the Democratic nomination - does that number represent 50% + 1 of the total number of available delegates with or without counting the Florida and Michigan delegate count (which of course we know at this time have had their delegate count zeroed out)? Clearly, if it includes these delegate counts, neither candidate is likely to achieve the required number.
Thanks in advance for your knowledge on this subject.
