With President's day approaching, I thought this was appropriate.
I've long since had this idea that Barack Obama is very much like Abraham Lincoln.
- They're both from Illinois
- Both lawyers
- Both served the federal gov’t for a short period of time ~ lincoln was only a one-term Congressman, though he served the Ill. HoR for 4 terms.
- Both great orators.
- Both borne on the backs of a new "movement" (the newly-created Repub party, and the rising Progressive mvmt)
- Both born of very modest means (Lincoln in an actual log cabin)
- Both were strongly against wars of aggression ~ see Lincoln's opposition to Polk and his (in)famous "Spot Speech"
- Both conceived of the US as a nation, rather than a collection of states, and sought to bring people together.
- Both president during extremely divided times (as this current era seems about as fractured as the Civil War period ~ minus, ya know, the bullets and stuff ;) )
- Unfortunately, both in danger of assassination.
Editor's Note: Yes, i know this diary should be longer and more detailed, but I just don't have the time to do the full research necessary for it as RL is a real PITA. Maybe you good kossacks can pick up the slack for me, and post some other thoughts ~ ;)
Thanks ~
