Bush is up in five minutes to go directly to the American people and demand amnesty for telecom companies. As everyone knows, he House is the last link, if they capitulate it's over. The House bill did not include the immunity the President demands to avoid a veto, the Senate's did. Presumably they are in Conference Committee now, but details on that issue are scarce.
Contact your Representative to let him or her know the Constitution still matters, Bush is discredited, so there is no risk in doing the right thing. If yours is a Rep who has done the right thing, compliment them.
UPDATE
The tone of the questions by the reporters was best incapuslated by this question:
"Mike" (who is this "reporter?"): Mr. President, of FISA, you worry that perhaps some House Democratic leaders are playing a high stakes game of wait and see. In terms of if we all get attacked we all lose; if we don't get attacked that means you don't need all the powers in FISA.
UPDATE:
This exchange was interesting, does anyone know what it means?
Q. (Elane) Mr. President youhave stressed over and over the importance of FISA reform to keep America safe, and yet you have not yet filled a key National Security post Fran Townsend announced her resignation months ago, in November. What is the delay in there and what are the Americans to make of that delay, is America less safe because of it?
A. We've got a fine man named Joel Bagnell working that office right now. He is a professional, I trust his judgment. He is a real good guy, and no they shouldn't worry about Joel, he knows what he is doing.
A. John
Q. But sir, the American people...Homeland Security advisor
A. John
A. Joel Bagnell is occupied the position Elaine. He is doing the job, you see I've got confidence in him. So should the American people have confidence in him, he is a fine professional. He knows what he is doing, I'm very comfortable in saying on your cameras that our staff in the White House, led by Joel Bagnell knows what they are doing when it comes to the matter of advising the President on matters of homeland security.
