Hillary may not have won the first battle over health care but because of her brave efforts many more children did not have to suffer.
When my second son was born he had a condition that caused both of his eyes to turn outwards. This was not a self-correcting condition and needed expensive surgery to fix. This surgery had to be done quickly because there was a risk that his eyes couldn't be fixed past a certain age. I had private health care but the insurance company told us no because his vision would be fine with corrective glasses so there was no real health issue. Essentially they told us that they didn't care that he had a disfiguring condition and that we would just have to live with it.
We were distraught. Money was tight as we were a young family with only one income earner. We thought because we were not on welfare that we would just have to dig up the money ourselves. That would have taken years. Then one day going through the paper my wife saw an article about Hillary Clinton and the new public medical plans she had helped to start for lower-income families in need. The article even had a number to call.
To make a long story short. We ended up not paying a dime out of pocket for the operation which was covered under her new plan based on our income. Shortly thereafter the amended Child-Tax credit paid for the medications he needed after the surgery.
I'll always be thankful to Hillary for bravely pushing health care back into the public consciousness. Everytime I look at my son's perfect beautiful brown eyes I know she'll always have my vote.
