I am 40 years old and this is the first time ever in my life that my vote for president will actually MATTER. In my life experience so far as a native Bostonian, Massachusetts has never had any real power to alter the presidential race (primary or general) until this moment.
A lot of us in Massachusetts are talking about this and, as my friend said the other day - "Stop! I'm getting goosebumps!"
Both of our front-running candidates are making a last pitch in Massachusetts today: Hillary is coming to Worcester at 11:30am, and Barack is coming to downtown Boston for what will be a huge rally 8pm tonight at the Seaport/World Trade Center. His event is poised to eclipse hers as it carries Kennedy, Kerry, Gov. Deval Patrick, and the Boston location, not to mention the time of 8pm (working people can attend). I'll be there!
Honestly I'm "eh" about the Superbowl. Not a big sports fan -- victory would have been great, but Pats have won a few; share the wealth lest we turn into the football equivalent of overly smug Yankees fans.
But this Super Tuesday is the real deal. History in the making. We stand poised ready to break one of two barriers (gender and race) to the Democratic nomination for the American presidency... and quite likely we stand poised to break that barrier for the presidency itself. Count me as one white male who is thrilled to be a part of this new frontier in American politics. And it is a thrill for me personally to know that my vote, the votes of my friends and family and neighbors and co-workers, etc, will matter greatly tomorrow on Super Tuesday.
I'm also heartened to know that Super Tuesday is not going to turn out the way its architects had hoped. No quick end to the primary season! That much is clear. And how great is it that other states, other voters coast to coast, might feel these goosebumps too. That is my wish for you all... that you feel it. That the outcome is still in play, that your vote could make a real difference. It's a great feeling. I'm probably going to be up all night, overexcited, after coming home tonight from the Obama rally. Hope someone else can post pics etc... I am low tech :)
I am one of those DailyKos members who "hearts" both of our candidates (and Edwards too). At this point I regard Hillary and Barack as equally worthy of the presidency and ready for it in terms of their stated agendas and platforms. Should Hillary win, I will applaud and stand ready to help her defeat John McCain (or the Mittster, heh heh). But the demographics, the passion, the energy, the campaigns' modes of operation, and their core messages are all pointing me to vote for Barack Obama tomorrow.
Yes We Can!
