Courtesy of information available at The Green Papers, here is an hour-by hour account when polling will conclude and when caucuses will convene tonight.
Actually, I lied a little bit above the fold, because action has already begun in the Pacific and on the mainland. I have focused on the Democratic contests; there are a few states holding GOP contests that I'm skipping over for my intended audience--sorry if you have a burning desire to know about the Montana Republican Caucuses.
3 p.m. Eastern--American Samoa and North Dakota Caucuses convene. American Samoa has a traditional caucus. The North Dakota nomenclature is a little bit of a misnomer--the "caucuses" last for 6 hours, and participants stay just long enough to cast a presidential preference ballot. It really walks and talks like a very short party-run primary.
After we learn how American Samoa awarded its six delegates, each of whom have half a vote, we have a long wait until . . .
7 p.m. Eastern--Polls close in Georgia. All the other traditional early closing states are holding off tonight, so we'll have ample time to dissect the returns from the Peach State. The biggest wave of poll closures and caucus meetings occurs at . . .
8 p.m. Eastern--Polls close in Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Massachusetts, Missouri, New Jersey, Oklahoma, and Tennessee. Minnesota and Kansas Caucuses convene. Connecticut, New Jersey, and Missouri should give early indications about how much BHO has cut into HRC's lead. There will be a lot to digest, which will make it easy to miss . . .
8:30 Eastern--Polls close in Arkansas. Don't expect a whole lot of suspense here--both Arkansans should do well. There will likely be more suspense at . . .
9 p.m. Eastern--Polls close in Arizona, New Mexico, and New York. Colorado Caucuses convene. Idaho Caucuses convene in the Mountain Time Zone (southern part of the state). Minnesota and North Dakota Caucus Presidential balloting concludes.
Then there's a pretty big wait until the big prize of the night starts to be tallied. For the true diehard election followers, there's this before California closes . . .
10 p.m. Eastern--Polls close in Utah. Alaska Caucuses convene in the Alaska Time Zone (most of the state). Idaho Caucuses convene in the Pacific Time Zone (panhandle).
Finally, we get to determine which of the widely divergent polls in California is closer to right, and we work our way back to the International Date Line . . .
11 p.m. Eastern--Polls close in California. Alaska Caucuses convene in the Aleutian Time Zone.
Corrections are welcome. Enjoy.
