Democrats had a great night yesterday. As a Hillary supporter, I think she had the greater night and that was apparent when you compare and contrast her speech with Obama's. Typically, the winner takes a positive tone and the loser tends to get somewhat negative.
Hillary thanked Obama:
I also want to congratulate Senator Obama for his victories tonight. And I look forward to continuing our campaign and our debate about how to lead this country better off in the next generation, because that is the work of my life - that is why I started my career fighting for abused and neglected children, children who have drawn the short straw in life, because this nation gave me every opportunity and we can do the same for every child.
However, after Obama congratulated Hillary for her victories, he didn't stop there. He employed a very negative tone :
But this fall we owe the American people a real choice. It’s change versus more of the same. It’s the future versus the past.
It’s a choice between going into this election with Republicans and Independents already united against us, or going against their nominee with a campaign that has united Americans of all parties around a common purpose.
It’s a choice between having a debate with the other party about who has the most experience in Washington, or having one about who’s most likely to change Washington. Because that’s a debate we can win.
It’s a choice between a candidate who’s taken more money from Washington lobbyists than either Republican in this race, and a campaign that hasn’t taken a dime of their money because we’ve been funded by you.
And if I am your nominee, my opponent will not be able to say that I voted for the war in Iraq; or that I gave George Bush the benefit of the doubt on Iran; or that I support the Bush-Cheney policy of not talking to leaders we don’t like. And he will not be able to say that I wavered on something as fundamental as whether or not it’s ok for America to use torture – because it is never ok. That is the choice in this election.
Interesting. It seems like he is in favor of debating which candidate is best for the presidency. I sincerely hope he takes up Senator Clinton's offer to debate at least once a week between now and March 4thso we have all the information we need on both candidates. It isn't enough to deliver inspiring speeches, we need to know what we're getting into if either of these two candidates should win.
I remember that Kerry asked Bush to debate him once a month and the Kossacks were pretty happy about it, so I hope they share the same feeling now.
