I'm floored. I think the folks over in Obamaland must be pinching themselves. Is this really happening? Are you sure it's just not a campaign manager's freewheeling fantasy? Not only does Clinton's injection of personal wealth (an amount four times the entire personal net worth of her opponent) show the wear-and-tear of her campaign. It also sets her up for some very unsavory comparisons ... and sets her against her husband's own words. Read on ...
Ben Smith over at Politico quotes Hillary as having said, "the results last night proved the wisdom of my investment."
I don’t know if she was conscious of this or not, but she is recalling the joke that Obama made at Romney’s expense during the CA debate. Remember? "Romney hasn’t gotten a very good return on his investment during this presidential campaign."
Now, she may have decided consciously to do this–to say, I’m not like Romney ... I actually got a good return. However, I don’t think it was conscious on her part. It didn’t hew very closely to the phrasing of Obama's jibe.
Either way, this story–Clinton pumps personal wealth in; Obama counters with equal amount from small donors–paints her as a nepotistic, aloof, multi-millionaire.
And let’s not forget this quote from Bill Clinton (also posted by Ben Smith): "They say you couldn’t stop me from spending all the money I’ve saved over the last five years on Hillary’s campaign if I wanted to, even though it would clearly violate the spirit of campaign finance reform."
Oh, the nerve! To do such a thing would "CLEARLY VIOLATE THE SPIRIT OF CAMPAIGN FINANCE REFORM." It couldn’t be better for Obama if Plouffe had scripted it himself–especially since campaign finance reform is one of the major feathers in Obama’s legislative cap.
Symmetrical and ironic. Follows the Aristotelian unities of time and action proper to tragedy: takes place in under 24 hours and in one compact, unidirectional catastrophe. Utterly poetic.
