I just got home from my Washington state Democratic caucus, and it was packed!
I live in Federal Way, a city of around 80k, located 20 miles south of Seattle.
The caucus was held in a middle school cafeteria. There were tables with space for around 600 folks. Every table was full, with at least another 200-300 folks standing. The walls inside and out were plastered with Hillary posters (they got there first). There were a few Obama supporters waving signs at the entrance, and more inside. The Obama folks were by far the most vocal. Most people showed up early and things went fairly smoothly. Especially considering more than half the people had never attended caucus before, including me.
My precinct is tiny, with one delegate to select for the district caucus. 5 people showed up to vote. 4 women and one man (Me). We ended up splitting 3-2 for Obama. Because we were so small we finished quickly. We selected a young woman to be our delegate. I didn't get a sense of how the overall delegate count was going to go. I think all of us were very happy to have the choices we do, and I expect the vote to be fairly close.
I am cautiously optimistic about our chances this year. If we can sustain the level of turnout, the R's don't stand a chance this time. I voted for Obama partly because I believe he can generate a big turnout, and get down-ticket democrats elected.
This experience has given me a renewed sense of optimism about the future.
