I propose that we adopt Hussein as a multi-layered greeting, along the lines of "Aloha."
Aloha means different things depending on the context, both 'hello' and 'goodbye' -- not knowing the language, I'll leave that to others to explain!
So what are the layers of Hussein?
The root layer: "Beautiful Child"
Using Hussein in its root form is a deep and paternal/maternal expression of love and nurture for another. It's the sort of thing you would say to your child as you watch her sleep and dream.
The cross-cultural layer: "I am Hussein."
Using the cross-cultural form is implied when the speaker has no original cultural affiliation with the word (for example, is not Muslim or is not from a country where the word has been commonly used before.) For us to use the word at all means we are making a cross-cultural statement, although the context tells us what our meaning is.
This is the context of the whole suggestion, of course. The original cross-cultural intent has been to sow fear and antipathy against an enemy; I'm suggesting that to use the word in love is an even more powerful statement of inclusion and tolerance and welcome of another "beautiful child" of the human race.
The enemy layer: "Saddam Hussein"
This is a deep layer. Remembering first that we were for Saddam Hussein before we were against him. Remembering that the enemy of our enemy is not always our friend. Remembering the injustices of Saddam Hussein, and holding our own leaders accountable for the atrocities that he committed against the citizens of Iraq, because our leaders put him there. Remembering the atrocities committed against the citizens of Iraq by our own beloved brothers and sisters. Remembering and correcting the mistakes of our War on Iraq.
The hope layer: "Barack Hussein Obama"
I think we should tell the RNC that it's okay to use his name. Because we will! We will call each other Hussein on the street, and smile and hug. We will call any kid we don't know Hussein and he'll understand that we hope his life will be a joyful one. We will proudly say, "I support Barack Hussein Obama."
Peace.
