Behind the Hype - A Logical Look
Again, I do not condone the remarks in question, or the perceived lack of action on Hillary's part. I would be absolutely delighted to see an African-American or woman become President (or anyone who is not a white male for that matter), as would most Liberals and Democrats.
But it does seem ironic that, in one breath the media condemns Hillary and Ms. Ferraro, and in the next breath goes on to report how Obama got 9 out of every 10 African American vote, and how important the black vote is to Obama. So, the question itself (stripped of any insinuations or nuances) would seem valid. If Obama were white, would he still be getting 9 out of 10 black votes? If Hillary were not a woman, would she be getting the female vote? Both are valid questions.
Where the problem lies is that these questions would seem to suggest that race or gender are the ONLY reasons for these votes, when in fact, experience, qualifications, and a thousand other factors play a part in EVERY vote ANY candidate receives. Would a black Obama get 9 out of 10 black votes if he had no experience in the Senate? Another valid question. The problem here is not in the questions, but in the meaning applied to the questions by those who hear them.
Each candidate is a package, and no candidate would ever be exactly where they are in a race if they were not who they are - the complete package. However, this raises the question as to what motive is behind someone making these kind of remarks, and THAT is where racisim can be determined. So, as I said, I am not defending anyone here, just applying logic to arrive at an unbiased base from which to start an analysis of what this all means about Hillary and Ms. Ferraro.
