There was a thoughtful column in the Friday Chicago Tribune that readers here might be interested in. I encourage you to read the whole thing (an exerpt is provided below the fold).
Next to the article is an 11-minute video from an Obama press conference in which he discusses race issues pertaining to his campaign that is well worth watching. His responses made me very glad that I voted for him! I think it would reflect well on the candidate if his supporters followed in his footsteps in discussing sensitive matters in such a respectful way.
Here is a quote from the column:
I understand why some people bristled at Ferraro's comments on Obama. Hillary supporters bristle to hear that she wouldn't be where she is without Bill. There's some truth in both claims. So? They're still strong candidates.
Clinton versus Obama shouldn't be a contest of afflictions. They've both overcome huge social roadblocks, and they've both been granted huge gifts. One gift is the chance to run at this moment, when the American public seems genuinely open to a new way.
We're going to talk, we have to talk, vigorously and publicly, about race and gender, in all their complex dimensions. The words won't always come out right. Offense will be given and taken. That's how we figure out where we've been and where we want to go.
What do you think?
