I will be the first person to admit that I am politically naive. But I really hoped this election would be different. Both Obama and Mccain are known for their disdain for dirty identity politics. I was hoping that just once cooler heads would prevail, and we would have an issues based election. Obama would give us his vision of America, Clinton would give us her vision, and Mccain would give his, we would have a civil debate, and the American people would chose the vision they most agree with.
Instead what we get is the most divisive campaign I can remember in my lifetime. With the Clintons trying to marginalize Obama as a black candidate, Obama has to weather accusation of being a terrorist agent, but at the same time is hesitant to condemn his nutjob pastor, Romney forced to apologize for being Mormon, Mccain accused of being too old, Huckabee trying to pander to a particular religious group...
Is this what politics has become? I recently talked to a friend who rejoiced that soon Democrats will have an electoral edge over Republicans because the Hispanic population is growing. Is this it folks? We can only change election results by hoping one ethnic group outnumbers the other? Whatever happened to winning hearts and minds?
This was supposed to be the election that brings America back together. Obama, Clinton, Mccain, all good politicians, all honorable people who are capable of mature debate. Instead out country is once again divided on racial, religious, sexual, and generational lines. Very dissapointing.
