I just finished caucusing and it took forever. Our district has 42 delegates and 30 went to Obama and the other 12 went to Clinton. My fiance Caucused in a nearby district with 90 delegates (+/- a couple) and she noticed that is was also heavily in favor of Obama. We are in central Austin a little north of the university and I would say it is no surprise that support is pretty high for Obama around here.
Overall things were handled pretty well in our precinct although things went pretty slowly. Caucusing was supposed to start at 7:15 but could not start until 7:45 when everyone was finished voting in the primary. The caucus votes were not finished being collected until 9ish and they were not tabulated until 10ish and we did not leave until around 11. Of course the only people who stayed past 9 were those that were interested in being delegates to the county convention.
Ultimately I think that the caucus was a very new experience for the majority of democrats in our area (myself included) and from what I can tell the caucus feeds into what sets the party agenda (as delegates we voted on whether or not our precinct wanted the party to support certain issues ranging from clean energy to universal health care to lowering the speed limit to increase fuel efficiency). I will be interested to see how the caucus turnouts fair in future elections as I think they are really important for party involvement. I wish I could write more eloquently about the experience but it is late and I am tired and it is already getting hazy. Ultimately I hope this diary provides a little insight into the unique process we have in Texas.
