Too often in my life, I go to political rallies and see great Dems speaking passionately about the economy. I hear how the jobs have to stay in America, and american workers have to stop getting the short end of the stick. I was impressed with Obama when he actually mentioned by implementing executive orders, he could empower unions almost immediately. But to be fair, the most of what I hear is so similar to all the other speechs-get the lobbyists, do more tax cuts for the middle class, job training and some bankruptcy and credit card reform. Guess what, the repubs always come up with one or two hot button issues agaisnt Dems. We all know what it is-no new taxes. We, as Dems, argue our nuanced platforms and we get shot down with the big government big tax label. I got a couple hot buttons that might just knock this crap out of folks minds.
Here goes.
I'll make it simple. This will appeal to those reagan Democrats I hear so much of. They are real. They are so there for the taking.
Number 1 hot button. Reduce overdraft fees at banks.
Stop predatory late fees and make banks stop charging fixed fees for over draft amounts of as little as $0.01. Banks count on overdraft fees to make up to a third of their total profit and take the money from the people who can least afford it. Make the penalty fee a percentage of what people actually borrow.
I don't expect people here to 'get' this, no offence. I had a diary on here earlier on this subject and the response was something like 'well go to a credit union'. Credit Unions charge similar rates.
The real hot button point is this-people will remember this above all other issues. Nearly everyone I know has had various degrees of horror with these fees. Payday loan centers are springing up as a result of banks charging these fees. Poor working families know this all too well.
Number 2 hot button. Eliminate the IRS from our lives.
This is a direct steal from Ron Paul's big popularity. This is easy, as it would simplify the withholding due and take it directly out with no return needed. This is more of a fluff issue, but it shows people that you are a bold decision maker. And its very popular.
I lived in England for 7 years and never had to file tax return there as I was employed. It is not really that revolutionary. But it is something that is easily remembered
So, to recap. Obama would be for cutting your bank charges and eliminating your tax returns forever. Go Obama!
