I don't know why I did it, but I just sent a letter (via his webpage) to John/m McCain.
The letter after the Jump.
Dear Senator McCain,
Elitism? Really?
This is a letter my dad will never write (well he might if he feels disrespected enough). My dad was in Vietnam in 67 and 68. He was a Marine and fought in the Tet Offensive.
Before that my dad grew up dirt poor (as in dirt floor poor). Even though his mom had a college degree, she could only work as a maid and a nanny. That's just what black women were forced to do in Oklahoma. My dad, never had a Christmas tree until he was an adult. My Grandma raised 11 kids (3 girls and 8 boys)and my dad had to wear the hand me downs of his 3 older sisters.
Now, my dad was a star athlete, valedictorian, and class president. He accomplished all that even though he came from the poorest families in Sand Town (the Black part of Oklahoma city-its no longer there). Despite getting a scholarship to many other universities, my dad wanted to go to the Naval academy. He actually found a Senator to recommend him, but you see Senator McCain, the academies weren't letting in African Americans in large numbers at that time. They wanted them at the front lines, but not as officers. I'm sure you know the statistics of how many African Americans fought in Vietnam.
Five of my dads brothers also went (in different branches) and one died. Though my dad had scholarships before he went, his brothers did not. The only reason why his brothers got a college education was because of the GI bill. My parents later sacrificed a lot so I could go to private schools. We had many nights of just eating soup. We would have a Christmas tree but not much was under it. Now I go to law school (a good one) and we are deeply offended that any person that has lived you life, can call any person who is black or brown elite or suffering from elitism.
Senator McCain, I don't get spit on in Cincinnati because I'm elite. You have been blessed in your life (just being a live is a blessing) and yet you would have your campaign throw out words as if they don't matter? Obama may not have lived your average life as an African American, but people have (and continue) to treat him by just his skin color. So the next time your campaign wants to through out words like elite, look in the mirror and pick up your Bible, and remember to "judge not lest ye be judged".
Oh one more thing, you might want to also you may want to read Mathew 25:31-34 while you are at it.
I choose politicians based on who plays the game the least. It's sad that I see you are just playing a game. So, Senator McCain am I elite by your standards, if my parents now live in an exclusive neighborhood (that is still experience record foreclosures) are they elite? Sir, you campaign has said yes. What a sad day in America.
Sincerely wishing people would stop playing politics,
