I admit I was skeptical about whether or not the anecdote of Hillary saying "Screw Em" to Southern, working class whites would become any real story.
But now...the list of people coming forward to say that they witnessed this incident is growing. Bejamin Barber's account is the topic of the original story in the Huffington Post, where Harry Boyt confirmed it.
And now Alan Wolfe, who was also there, agrees!
He writes at the Plank:
Make that three. I was there. I hope people have heard of me. And Barber and Boyte have it right.
A lot of people compare Barack Obama to Bobby Kennedy. To me, he most resembles Bill Clinton, at least the Bill Clinton I knew then.
For the record, Bill's response to Hillary's outrage at these Southern whites who were making their life difficult was:
I know how you feel. I understand Hillary's sense of outrage. It makes me mad too. Sure, we lost our base in the South; our boys voted for Gingrich. But let me tell you something. I know these boys. I grew up with them. Hardworking, poor, white boys, who feel left out, feel that our reforms always come at their expense. Think about it, every progressive advance our country has made since the Civil War has been on their backs. They're the ones asked to pay the price of progress. Now, we are the party of progress, but let me tell you, until we find a way to include these boys in our programs, until we stop making them pay the whole price of liberty for others, we are never going to unite our party, never really going to have change that sticks.
Gee. That DOES sound like Obama! I wonder how Hillary can feel such outrage at Barack's comments...when it's the same idea that Bill Clinton has probably expressed countless times. Very curious.
So, now that three people heard her say this, do you think this will become a big story? Will it be mentioned at tonight's debate?
Update:
By the way, the Clinton campaign isn't "denying" this. From what I can tell they are just wishing it away.
"So, you've got two guys we've barely heard of remembering a verbatim quote from 13 years ago?... Sounds totally and completely reliable," responded Jay Carson from the Clinton campaign.
Does anyone have any other statement from them?
