I didn't watch the debate last night. Instead of being at home in the evening, I was in York, PA, an hour away from my hometown of Gettysburg, talking with the regional field director for the Obama campaign about our GOTV plans. I didn't watch the debate last night because I am helping get Barack Obama nominated.
But after I got home late last night, I checked into Daily Kos and found the site awash with (apparently justifiable) anger at ABC, George and Charlie, Clinton, Hannity, et al. And this morning, the gnashing of teeth continues.
Take the jump...
I'm not saying that protesting the debate is not a worthwhile activity. But if you live anywhere near PA, or are at all able to make it here by this Saturday, let me suggest that you quit your bitchin' and GET INVOLVED. You want to show the corporate media that they don't run our democracy? Then step up and help run voters to the polls in PA.
For the past month, I have been on the ground in Gettysburg, making banners, calling voters, organizing high school students for GOTV, writing letters to the editor, talking to the press, under-eating and under-sleeping, learning all kinds of new campaign-related skills, shaking Michelle Obama's hand, and generally having a hell of a time.
Our office is energized! We are ready to mobilize little Adams County. We are ready to win our CD for Obama. We are ready to help Obama win South-Central PA (the swing region of the state). We are ready for Obama to pull off a surprise in PA. We are ready for him to be our nominee and President. We are fired up and ready to go.
But we need more people. We have contacted hundreds of supporters in the area over the past month -- now we need to find enough volunteers to knock on all of their doors at least three times over the next half-week.
If you live near DC and can drive up to Gettysburg for an extended stay starting this Saturday, by all means do it. We need your help. Barack needs your help. And it will let you get out some of your frustration at ABC, Clinton et al. Shoot me an email (marmstr1@gmail.com) if you are coming and I will find you housing.
If you can't make it into PA, then make some callsover the next week and a half.
Do what you can. This movement is about all of us. It's about people-powered democracy. About taking power back. Barack has always said that this would not be a simple process. The powers that be are already gearing up to derail his campaign. Last night made that crystal clear. So we know what we are up against. The question is: What are you going to do about it?
