As we all know, the Democratic party is divided and I am sure many here blame it all on Hillary Clinton. Before I go any farther I will state that I am a strong Obama supporter and believe he would be the best candidate by far. But this diary is not to be about why I support Obama, it is about how the supporters on both sides are dividing the Democratic Party. The actions taken by supporters, on both sides, against fellow Democrats is despicable and disgusting. I will relent that Senator Clinton has not helped the whole situation at all but neither have the supporters including many on this site. If things remain the way they are, not only will we lose the General election and face another 4 years of Bush policies, but it will have a much longer lasting effect. I have seen this happen before. When one candidate is defeated, he or she becomes resentful and so do that candidates supporters. Even after those candidates are gone it will linger. How can I know this? It happened before, with the Liberal party of Canada.
In 1984, the Liberals elected John Turner as their leader, to the dismay of many Jean Chrétien supporters. Well Turner lost the election, badly, and Chrétien retired due to his basic hatred of Turner. Turner eventually resigned and Chrétien returned to "save the day." But Chrétien was already hated by Turner's core supporters and they decided to fall behind Paul Martin. Well Paul Martin lost on the first ballot in the 1990 convention and the divide in the party ripped wide open. For the next 12 years the Liberal party split into the two sides, Martin or Chrétien. Then it happened again after Chrétien retired and Martin took over and again in the recent leadership convention. There have been literal purging of the party against the supports of the "enemy". There has even been sabotage to campaigns during elections. This divide started 24 years ago and it is now worse then it has ever been! Why did this happen? It happened because of the immense hatred between the supporters. The whole point of this is that if we continue to insult, attack, and demean Clinton supporters, we are damning the country to 4 more years of Bush policies! The way some Clinton supporters are treated on Daily Kos is despicable. For one, we have a thing called freedom of speech. Its a profound thing really, you see people are allowed to say whatever they want! Although it may be unwise for a Clinton support to come to Daily Kos and post on here, it is not wrong and they do not deserve to be insulted. Remember theses people are FELLOW DEMOCRATS! We all believe in the main basic principles of the Democratic party and we should all work to achieve these goals, with whoever the nominee is. I do believe that Obama is the best candidate and I believe he has won, I even believe that Clinton needs to end this right away, but she still does not deserve some of the things said about her. Yes, she should be ashamed the way she seems to have put herself above the party, but many here have put your own interest over the party. I know many Clinton supports do the exact same thing and this is a diary for them just as much as it is for Obama supporters. The biggest and most important thing is winning in November. That is the goal and I think we need to remember that. We need to end the sexist and racist comments, we need to stop insulting fellow democrats. We need to unify! Obama preaches about unifying the country and we all want to see it, but the problem is we are working just as hard to get him nominated as we are to divide the party. When some one is attacked over the simple fact that they support a candidate is ridiculous and something I do not expect to see from Democrats, in fact it is something I expect from Fox! So if next time a Clinton support or even an Obama support who might not agree with you completely, do not trash, demean, or insult them. State why you disagree and have a good debate over who would be better. Do it for the benefit of the party
