I'm liveblogging some of the MSNBC discussion tonight, just to keep the excitement going after a long 6 weeks. Check back as I try to put some added stuff into the comments.
UPDATE: Please recommend. If I slip off the front page, I'm going to give up the liveblogging.
UPDATE 2: i'm now four diaries from the bottom of the page. If I disappear, I'm giving up the liveblog. Please recommend if you want me to continue. Thanks for all the commentary.
UPDATE 3: I'm slipping off the front page and I'm sick of hearing HRC supporters make their b.s. spin about her "tremendous" victory. So the liveblog is ending. I'm sick of this. End it now. Do the right thing, Sen. Clinton. Do the right thing. Thanks to everyone who commented.
UPDATE 4: Okay, I've got to say this. HRC talking about people filling up at the pump makes me sick. If she's really so concerned about all of us who are living paycheck to paycheck she'd back out of the contest NOW so we can get to the real test of beating John McSame in the general. "This is your campaign?" Hmmm. Sound familiar. F you, HRC. F you. I said before I'd vote for any democrat over McSame, but if she wins the nomination, I think I'm moving to Canada.
SWITCHING: I'm putting more recent liveblogging at the top now. Sorry for the confusion. There's a line below where the liveblog was reverse chronological.
9:01 CDT:
Todd: there's no vote around Philly. Wow.
Is Todd hinting that Obama will close the margin? Hmmm.
Todd: "maybe it inches down a point or two."
ASIDE: This sucks. No results that mean an end to this bitter campaign. I know we weren't supposed to get our hopes up, but dammit, this election is TOO FUCKING IMPORTANT for this b.s.
Olbermann is saying there's more money coming in.
Fineman: Western Penn. is HRC's story. She's winning big in counties around Pitt. '
8:55 CDT:
Matthews is choking up.
Williams: (paraphrase) We are so chummy with all the people in this campaign.
Matthews: What is up with the Clintons? (paraphrase)
The conversation now seems to be whether Clinton is hoping for an Obama defeat in the GE. They've conceded the elected delegate and popular vote, and it's a putsch. "He can't win, he's a loser. ... how do unite the party?"
OK, so still no spread mentioned in the commentary. "Certainly in the next hour."
Wow, this is sounding a lot like New Hampshire. The early frame was HRC was down and out, now they are more guarded in their comments.
Anyone else want to comment?
8:47 CDT:
Brian Williams finally gets on.
Primaries = Tornados? WTF!
Money - Russert is saying HRC campaign is saying "contribute $5" "This campaign is alive and well" Shit!
It's now a discussion about how screwed up this stuff is and how BHO voters aren't going to vote for HRC. This is some scary stuff. Williams doesn't see a "modern parallel" to Kennedy/Johnson.
POST SOME COMMENTS: I'll try to bring them up into the post. man, you people respond quickly.
8:42 CDT:
Okay, so I'm back - 28 percent who wouldn't vote for HRC? Wow. That's scary. Look, I'm supporting BHO, but I'd vote for a tall tree before I'd vote for John McCain. Scary. Don't know what I think about that. But I do wish HRC would step down. Doesn't look like she's going to.
- 40 CDT:
More BS Exit Poll Crap. I'm taking a break for a couple of minutes to breath some fresh air. BTW, did anyone else note that MSNBC has not gone to a commercial in a LONG time?
8:35 CDT:
It's Claire McCaskill now on with Matthews.
Is she a BHO supporter? It sounds like it. She doesn't sound as shrill as McCauliffe.
"I think he's pretty good at pot roast and potatoes." Too bad the media doesn't cover that stuff.
HINT TO CHRIS: Nobody my age thinks Soc. Sec. is going to be there when we get to that point. Get a clue.
McCaskill: It's hard to campaign on social security. ... The important thing is that we not lose sight of which candidate has energized an incredible amount of people in this campaign.
She's spinning good. Making a pitch for superdelegates.
Matthews doesn't realize that Obama is still dealing with a fellow democrat (so-called), so he can't be "edgy" with his message - unlike HRC.
8:30 CDT:
Maddow: This guy can't beat republicans. (my question is "why?" Why can HRC beat republicans any more than BHO?)
AND AGAIN WITH THE IDIOT PAT BUCHANAN!
Okay, I'm officially tired of this "he's spent so much mone" crap. BHO was 20 points down when this thing started. It's ALWAYS more expensive to start from the underdog. Why doesn't anyone say this?
Robinson is again the source of reason - "a war of attrition."
But in the "real world" - Greatest Robinson line of the night.
Gregory: "This guy came out of nowhere." Almost tripped up and gave a margin projection. :-)
Maddow: The fact that she's broke right now in the campaign doesn't say a lot about her electability.
Maddow is slapping Buchanan around and he wants to spit out his crap. Blah, blah, blah.
WTF!?!?!? Did Buchanan just talk about the Marxist dialectic?!?!?
(I think Robinson and Maddow just realized how INSANE Buchanan is - LOL)
- 23 CDT:
Olbermann: Talking about brands - throwing out a new product and wiping out the old brand. Does Penn. change that?
Russert: I don't think it will be. He has a ready reserve from the Internet.
Interesting from Harold Ford - could margin cause anxiety. Russert - I have not had any indication of that in our reporting so far.
If he wins NC and Indiana, it's locked down.
(why does anyone think she's going to win NC?)
WHY ARE THEY NOT TALKING MARGINS?!?!?
Matthews: They're changing the rules from delegates to popular votes. "they reserve the right to (change the rules) again and again and again." Finally.
Russert: (They) have one thing they want, HRC to be the nominee, and they'll use any avenue available to get there.
(And I can't see HOW HRC is the better candidate against McCain)
Matthews: Mulligan after mulligan after mulligan.
ASIDE: I think the MSNBC crew (the SANE ones) are now turning on HRC's goalpost changing.
8:18 CDT:
CHUCK TODD - FINALLY A VOICE OF REASON!!!!
It's almost impossible for HRC to win on pledged delegates. She's got to make up 150 pledged delegates - 69-70 percent. Assuming delegates are a wash - Suddenly, 251 delegates left.
Todd: 80 percent. She'd have to win 80 percent of what's left. ... Take oregon off the table, it's impossible in a proportional system.
So can we just call this and go home now?
Now back to Russert:
(we still don't have a full spread yet on MSNBC)
Olbermann - McCauliffe is spinning and changing the rules.
8:14 CDT:
Why are two losers (Ford and Scarborough) talking about "winning" politicians?
Ford: He's got to win Indiana - No Shit sherlock!
I think Scarborough is just baiting at this point. He's pumping up ratings.
Economy is guiding voters minds - Ford. You think?
Money - Scarborough is nuts. Clinton is bankrupt. Obama climbs out from a 20-point deficit. WTF?
8:09 CDT
Oh no he didn't.
McCauliffe is an idiot. he just included Mich and Fla in "States Hillary won." How about including them in "States BO didn't campaign in" you freakin' idiot.
WTF IS TERRY THROWING THE "KITCHEN SINK" STRATEGY ON OBAMA!" G-DDAMNIT.
He also mentioned that she's going to move ahead in popular vote. That's cryptic.
Still using the 10-state (?) strategy. Because all those other states don't matter, doncha know.
8:05 CDT
Russert: We're going to be hearing this crap for another two weeks! (paraphrase)
Oh, great.
North Carolina is essential to Obama. I think Obama has NC in the bag, FWIW.
Matthews: If HC can't cause an eruption ... what does all this avail.
Russert: Put that question mark on top of Obama's head. "Warning Sign."
ASIDE: Again, watch the way the narrative has changed. Earlier this evening they were burying Hillary, now Russert is basically resurrecting her campaign all on his own. He seems confident she's going to be able to gather some money. I'm not so sure. She's bleeding profusely.
Now it's McCauliffe. Wonder what he's going to say?
WHY OH WHY DO THEY LISTEN TO PAT BUCHANAN!!!!
What an idiot.
Robinson: "He has $41 million. He has a lot of money!" Way to go Eugene!
Maddow: He broke her bank!
Money quote!!!
KO: Hillary Clinton Telethon.
Hillary 52-48 - That's a close spread!!! If this happens, I will wake up tomorrow and rejoice!
_______________________________________
Fineman: Clinton is running out of bundlers - She has to go to the Internet, and Obama owns the Internet.
"Hillary had an expensive campaign ... tried to sort of strangle her ... by forcing her to spend so much money in penn. ... they really spent her into something close to oblivion."
This is good news for Obama's campaign.
Chris Matthews throws out a Titanic reference.
"The iceberg's name is Barack Obama."
BTW, I'm watching the live feed of MSNBC on the Internet, not TV.
In case anyone notices, the MSNBC frame on this primary is seriously bad news for Clinton. Nobody is talking about the fact that she will win the primary. They are all talking about the negatives - finances, super-delegates, volunteers, close race, etc.
This may all prove to be wrong, but something is telling me that this is the end game.
MORE COVERAGE:
Was too close to call - now too early to call.
Again, Clinton is going to win - no surprise there.
David Gregory: White men 53-46.
Okay, if that's not a close number all things considered, I don't know what is.
ASIDE: When the F@#$K is MSNBC going to send Pat Buchanan to the garbage yard. What an IDIOT. Thank G_d for Rachel Maddow.
Someone needs to send the security guards to escort Buchanan off the set. What a moron. (I'm just thankful Joe Scarborough isn't there)
I think Eugene Robinson wants to slap Buchanan too. I don't know how Maddow does it.
ANOTHER F$@%#KING COMMERCIAL BREAK!??!??!?
Great, I have to sit here for another break AND I get to experience that huckster Harold Ford on the flipside. You know, one would think after his experience in Tenn., when he was dogged by his race, he'd be a little more sympathetic to Obama. I don't get it.
SCORECARD: I don't know WTF they were doing in that last segment other than filling time with some screaming matches.
NEXT SEGMENT (7:41 CDT)
Scarborough is saying it's "closer than the clintons expected.
Ford: The money's going to dry up after this evening if she hasn't won big ... he's brought so many new voters into the fold ... we believe we can win more downstate races with him.
Ford is saying "a little larger victory than some had predicted." He's been handicapped by the producers to keep the numbers out. Boo!
Scarborough - STFU!!!! I thought he was sounding a little more sane at the beginning of this segment, then he does this crap. When is FOX going to hire him away? PLEASE!!
Republican Cloakroom my ASS!
I think Harold Ford is realizing how much of an idiot Scarborough is.
Can we ditch the term "Reagan Democrats"? Please. That's just a republican frame. I don't think $5/gallon gas is going to please those "Reagan democrats."
Scarborough - "it's a democratic year - boys duck, it's going to be ugly in the fall" Did he just predict a democratic presidency?
More exit polls.
74 percent says Clinton can improve economy? Must be that "gas tax holiday"
Olbermann - Too early to call.
Russert, Brokaw and Matthews: Oh, Jeez. We're going into the "back in the day" segment. Blecch!
Projected Winner - Hillary Clinton. No surprise there.
Interesting - Clinton won the "economy" question except in the highest and lowest income strata. Interesting.
MORE
Okay, so now Andrea Mitchell is changing her tune. "They think that their vote is going to begin to come in." But she's still singing the money tune. "they're feeling a whole lot better right now."
"Limps out of Penn. instead of leaping out of Penn."
So the Clinton camp is calling donors already to try to get the money before the spread closes. Interesting. Mitchell: The problem is that more of their donors have maxed out.
Olbermann asks Brokaw about the continuing problem of money.
Brokaw: "they have a harder time expanding their base than obama does." Again whipping out the exit polls. Obama is winning switchers. 60-38 among new Democrats.
FINEMAN: Superdelegates are getting "arms twisted" as soon as the results are coming out. "Hillary's got to come across with some new superdelegates."
Basically, Hillary has to get some SDs and some money. A hard sell. They're already pushing, even though the percentages aren't finalized.
NOTE: So we went from the earlier frame that Hillary was basically done to now they're pursuing the frame that Hillary is grasping to stay in the race. Interesting switch. Talk about a Horse Race!!!
Since Super Tuesday, Hillary's only got 12 SDs, Obama 83!
