the name of a seemingly forgotten generation. I was reading thereisnospoon's diary and it got me to thinking. What generation do I belong to? It isn't the Baby Boomers or Generation X. So where do I fit in? I was born in 1964 and remember some of the things from my childhood that happened. I was formed by things the Boomers were doing but was not a part of them. More after the jump.
We as a group are now in our 40's and 50's. I searched on Wikipedia for Generation X and ran across the term Generation Jones and when I looked at it I was surprised.
In demographic terms, Generation Jones was part of the baby boom which ended in the early 1960s. However, the events stereotypically associated with generational discussion of Boomers, including protests over civil rights and the Vietnam war and the emergence of rock music took place while the members of Generation Jones were still children or early teenagers. Thus the early life experience of this group was more similar, in many respects, to that commonly imputed to Generation X.
Where did the term come from:
The connotations of the name "Generation Jones" include:
* a large, anonymous generation
* the slang term "jonesin," which refers here to the unrequited craving felt by this generation of unfulfilled expectations
We are now parents and grandparents and an article I ran across talked about it. It was by Ian Christopher McCaleb and written in March 2000. There is also a book written by Jonathan Pontell. We are definitely a force in all aspects of life and expecially politics. And we are represented by a fellow Jonser, Barack Obama.
Are we finally finding out true voice and making ourselves heard? Isn't now the time to make a true difference and leave a better world for our children and grandchildren? I say yes and that is why I am supporting Barack Obama.
Be Well
