This year is a landmark year, either a woman, an african american, or a 71 year old will become president (How old is Ralph Nader? Only joking...) Now, I think Hillary and Barack are competent. I think McCain is an incompetent fool. But hey. But what worries me, is McCain's vice presidential choice. Not to scare people. The guy is old. And if he picks a guy (Yes, that includes Condi) he wins, what if something happens to the oldest president ever? We could be in for a ride on the huck-coaster. Yikes.
So, who are McCain's choices? Condi Rice
Bush administration official
(almost totally unlikely, but still there)
Alaska Governor - Sarah Palin
Stauncly pro-life.
Senator North Carolina - Elizabeth Dole
Anti-Abortion, Pro Bush energy, Pro Greenspan, Anti-Gays, Pro-barring immigrant children from school, and Pro tax breaks.
Florida Governor - Charlie Crist
Anti-Abortion, Allow concealed guns.
Mike Huckabee
Anti-Evolution, Anti Abortion, Blames congress, not Bush for debt, Pro-Death penalty, Supports displaying 10 commandments in school, Anti-Gays... You get the picture.
Mitt Romney
Virtually identical to Huckabee
Tom Ridge of Pennsylvania and several more.
These names may not seem incredibly enticing, and I can see why, but McCain's choice should be listened to with great interest. McCain is 71, and if he wins the election, and we become stuck with a VP, it would not be good to have a guy like Mike Huckabee in office:
"When we were in college we used to take a popcorn popper -- because that was the only thing they would let us have in the dorms -- and fry squirrels in the popcorn popper."
Nor Romney
"Like me, the great majority of Americans wish both to preserve the traditional definition of marriage and to oppose bias and intolerance directed towards gays and lesbians."
If it doesn't scare you that these people could be our president, I don't know what could.
Every single one of these candidates is pro-life, and has no real policy ideas on how to fix the economy, except for Rob Portman. If we have to settle for one of these people, or even John McCain, we will be in trouble. No matter how bad we think Hillary or Barack will be, the party has to win this. Or there will be a flat tax on squirrels...
