Let's go back and reconsider Phil Bredesen's "superdelegate convention" idea. Am I the only one who thinks that creating a Just Us League is a miserable solution to an annoying problem?
A while back--and I'm somewhat far behind on these things, probably due to alcohol (I have no regrets)--Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen had the idea that superdelegates ought to have their own convention at which they could cast their own votes for their presidential candidates, earlier and specialer than the rest. Now mind you, though I don't know nearly as much about Gov. Bredesen as Tennesseans would, I rather like him. Sure ain't easy to run and win as a Democrat there and it seems to me he's managed to do that without Liebermaning it up.
But man, what a crappy idea that was. I don't know what the answer is to the question of how to push either Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama--okay, probably Clinton--out of the race. It'll be a pain in someone's ass pretty much no matter what. However, seems to me what we don't want is to actually establish as a matter of procedure the proverbial smoke-filled room of party elders handpicking the nominees. Can you imagine the spin on this? Fox News and the Republicans would do everything in their power to paint this as a coronation by party elites, and frankly, they'd be right.
Doesn't seem like this is going to be happening--again, I'm quite late on this--and I'm glad. There are certain unfortunate stereotypes of Democrats that we don't need to go out of our way to feed.
