The big news of the hour is Hillary Clinton was caught in blatant lies, and it being called out on it. This is truly a surprising turn of events for the Democratic candidate. She was merely describing her political experience, using her visit to Bosnia and her understanding health insurance issues as examples.
Of course, the experience that she spoke of had nothing to do with Bosnia nor healthcare in America. As a seasoned politician she expected, as she should have based off her past experience, for the press corps to triumphantly print their stories from her heroic un-deeds. Her words to their TelePrompters, with some witty banter between anchors thrown in for good measure. That's the kind of leadership Americans want to see from their candidates and their newspapers. How could she possibly have ever predicted the journalists would check any facts?
I see nothing wrong with what Hillary did. As a candidate for president, she is expected to explain why she is best qualified to lead the country. The media has no right to prove her wrong by selecting a few facts to attack statements she has made.
Hillary should have been in the clear to make such statements. After all, this week, Obama went bowling and he was horrible! Not to mention, John McCain heroically maverick refusal of secret service protection on the campaign trail. How manly and American! With that much news to cover, there would be no way for major broadcasters and newspapers to be bored enough to challenge her on the basis of her statements. Hillary said it, therefore, it must be true, time to move on.
And yet, for some reason, they did. The news picked up on the fact that a politician lied and called them out on it. They even went through the trouble of looking at recorded video! Not only are they calling Hillary a liar (without ever using the word lie, of course. There may be still hope yet), but they are producing evidence to back up their claims! Originally, I thought it was just a fluke, due to comedian publicly stating it, but it now appears an epidemic of reporting is sweeping over the media outlets, with uncontrollable outbursts of insight and research such as this.
If such actual reporting continues, this disturbing trend may even broadcast these two messages. They may even investigate statements made by other candidates. Truly horrifying. Have we returned to a more savage time, where the 4th branch of the government is no longer the Vice-President, but rather the press corps?
We need to return to the good old days, when a politician is taken at their word no matter how frequently that word changes. Where's a breaking story about haircuts or a Paris Hilton sex tape when you need one.
(For those who are dense, this is not a defence, attack, or support for any Presidential Candidate, but rather an open letter to all types of media establishments to remind them that they are journalists and not stenographers.)
