Mark Halperin whom you would think should know better, asks, with reference to West Virginia:
"...why can’t the Democratic frontrunner win a primary in this battleground state?",
If by this time, the likely nominee were Hillary Clinton and we had Barack Obama insisting he will not drop out, suggesting he could take the fight to the convention, talking about the historic race of electing the first African-American President, bringing up Hillary's "white Americans, hard-wroking Americans comment", and still attacking her Iraq war vote, her health care mandate, etc,
If the May 13th primary was Georgia or North Carolina or South Carolina and Hillary was the frontrunner and the polls had her behind by double digits in these states,
Perhaps we could ask as you superficially do, "why can’t the Democratic frontrunner win a primary in this battleground state?"
Georgia and North Carolina are states Democrats can carry in the fall with an Obama-led ticket. In 1992, Bill Clinton lost North Carolina by only 0.79% and won Georgia by just 0.59% on the back of African-Americans who made up around 28% of the electorate. Hilary lost these states by double digits. By your own yardstick, why does she deserve to be Democratic nominee if she can't win a primary in a State Democrats won in 1992 and 1996?
In 1992, Bill Clinton won Ohio by just 1.83% and won New Jersey by just 2.37% Again, thanks to African-American voters who made up around 12% in Ohio and 14% in New Jersey. If he got the 8% of black vote George H. Bush got or the 8% Hillary is getting, he would've lost Ohio, New Jersey, Georgia, Maryland, DC, Michigan, Tennessee, Louisiana and Kentucky. That's a world of Electoral College Votes. Needless to say there would never have been a President Bill Clinton.
By your own yardstick, how will Hillary Clinton be able to win these battleground states if she's only getting 8% of the African-American vote?
Mark, you either think we're stupid, or you're not as smart as we thought you were. But to answer your question,
The State is West Virginia, the opponent is Hillary CLINTON - not John McCain, and the election is a DEMOCRATIC primary - not a general election.
I hope that helps.
