On Sunday across the nation we will honor our mothers. Perhaps we should also take the time to think about what a mother wants in a candidate.
She wants someone who shares her values and cares about the things that affect her family. A mother wants healthcare for her children, social security when she retires, and a good education for her children.
The families of Florida will soon start to feel the cuts that the Republican-led legislature has just enacted. The party that claims to have a lock on "family values" has just proven how out-of-touch they are with the average working family. John Mica has also led the way during his tenure in Congress. He voted against raising the minimum wage, against stem cell research, against lowering the rates on student loans, against regulating the subprime mortgage industry, and against removing the subsidies for Big Oil. John Mica would rather continue giving Exxon handouts, instead of giving relief to Americans paying record high gas prices.
Faye Armitage is a divorced mother who raised five children, so she knows the pressures that mothers feel trying to juggle a family and make ends meet. Florida is already ranked near the bottom in education. With the current budget cuts, we will fall even farther. Floridian mothers know their children deserve the same educational opportunities as children in number one ranked Vermont. Other moms worry they don’t have health insurance; and another, that her family can’t refinance their home because the value has dropped too much. These families deserve the same kind of representation in Congress that the CEOs have been getting for years. They have had a friend in John Mica for eight long terms. Let’s not give them a ninth.
To help us achieve that goal, please check out Faye's website and go to her ACT BLUE page and contribute what you can.
