I haven't seen this diaried elsewhere and thought it would be of interest.
According to MSNBC former Georgia Congresman Bob Barr has announced that he will seek the Libertarian Party's nomination for President.
The money quote:
Barr, who has hired Ross Perot's former campaign manager, acknowledged that some Republicans have tried to discourage him from running. But he said he's getting in the race to win, not to play spoiler or to make a point.
In other words, Barr intends to run a serious campaign that will probably take votes from McCain.
While the Libertarians are sufficiently furious with the Republicans over the war and their assault on civil liberties that some might have considered voting for Obama, its a pretty safe bet that this will mainly hurt McCain.
In addition to the usual Libertarian boilerplate about slashing the federal budget, Barr also makes the decidely unlibertarian promise to "strictly enforce immigration laws" which, frankly, would require a police state. But I digress.
Barr is an asshole, but he sufficiently high profile and the discontent within the GOP is sufficiently fevered that he has a real chance to throw a state or two to Obama. (I'll leave it to others to speculate on which ones.)
