I wasn't sure what to call this diary. The more I thought about it the more different outrageous titles drifted through my mind. Do I call it "Wherein Arlen Specter loses his mind"? Do I call it "We really have gone through the looking glass"? Do I call it "Sports imitates life"? Or do I call it "This is why people hate congress"? So many options and in the end I couldn't chose any of them.
But, my fellow Kossacks, I am going to share a story of how I came to realize (for the hundredth time) that Arlen Specter (and republicans by extension) are insane.
I was out shopping and decided to treat myself to lunch out. I go to a local eatery and sit down at a booth at the bar and there are a couple TVs. There was a baseball game on one and on the other I figured was a news channel because I look up and see "Arlen Specter seeks investigation into 'spygate'". There wasn't any sound on the TV so I couldn't hear what was being said but they had some portion where they were talking to some investigative reporter "reporting in" on the matter.
My first thought was "Why the hell do they have to put "gate" at the end of EVERYTHING?
My second thought was "eh, it's Specter. He talks tough but when it's time to put up or shut up he always gets back in the party line". Now, keep in mind that this entire time I thought I was watching a news channel and that "Spygate" had to do with the domestic surveilance program.
But I wasn't watching a news channel. I was watching ESPN. And "Spygate" is not about President Bush spying on Americans, It's about the NFL. Not even the NFL spying on Americans, but New England Patriots spying on their opponants' signals and game strategy during the SUPER BOWL.
My first thought when I saw that was "What the fuck?" and my next thought was "You have GOT to be fucking kidding me!"
Look, if congress wants to dictate to the NFL or the NHL or the NBA or the WWF (or WWE or WWXYZ, whatever they're calling themselves this week) how to run fucking SPORTS, then pass some laws. That's their JOB! It is not their job to police and judicate the fucking SPORTS INDUSTRY!
I am boggled! So now we, as Americans, have to be protected from quasi unfair sports practices but when it comes to protecting our constitutionally mandated RIGHTS, fuck that!
And why is it that President Bush has the authority to spy on our private communications without a warrant, but a football coach can't observe the open actions of their opponants?
And why is it they feel the need to legislate "fair play" into the sports industry and not the FUCKING FINANCIAL INDUSTRY? People have lost their houses and gone bankrupt from unscrupulous lender practices but that's no big deal, we have to make sure the baseball comission is doing more to stop steroid abuse.
AHHHhhh! It hurts my brain! These people have gone so far over the edge how can anyone take them seriously??
