I thought it best to put up my prediction of the ruling before it is released. While I know all of the lawyers and most of plaintiffs involved in the case, I am not claiming to have any inside information.
As you know, this case arrises out of the San Francisco Winter of Love. I had the great privilege of attending some of the very first weddings that February, and was also deputized as a marriage commissioner so that I could perform weddings. I married at least 50 couples. It was an amazing time in the City, deeply touching on so many levels. Straight people bringing flowers and coffee for those couples that had to wait outside in the rain. Such a happening.
Years ago the voters of California passed a DOMA by a wide margin. Since then the State Legislature has twice passed equal marriage rights only to be vetoed by the Governor both times. However, he has said that he will abide by the ruling of the court and fight any attempt for a ballot amendment to change the constitution to nullify the Supreme Court ruling should it go the way of allowing gay marriage.
prediction after the jump....
So, here’s what I think will happen. We will win the ruling by a 4 - 3 vote. There will be a standard 30 day wait until it is implemented and then LGBT couples will be marrying immediately after that as California joins our New England friend and becomes the second state to legalize gay marriage.
That of course will lead to the battle to end all battles to hold on to this right. The opposition has already gathered enough signatures for a ballot initiative and we will need to raise about $15 million to fight.
I’ll be a part of that fight. We will need all of us, gays, straights, Dems, Repubs, and anyone else who cares about fairness.
I could be wrong. But tomorrow, I hope we celebrate!
