The blatant assault on peace and stability reached an apogee of insanity today with the comments of President Bush. The implication is that men and women who value these things above war are "appeasers".
The attack, Mr. President, was not only levelled at Barack Obama but at you as well:
Bush has tried to stay out of the 2008 presidential race, and White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said Thursday that he didn't mean to directly criticize Obama.
"I would think that all of you who cover these issues and have for a long time have known that there are many who have suggested these types of negotiations with people that the president ... thinks we should not talk to," she said.
That, sir, is a resounding repudiation of you as well as Senator Obama. I expect you to take this seriously and consider what your support would mean. It is time for the great statesmen to overcome the mere politicians.
My first political involvement was for your campaign in a very, very red corner of the world. Like many supporters of Senator Obama, I was young. Too young, in fact, to vote for you. But I handed out your buttons to to everyone -- even the Amish who, much to my surprise, didn't wear or use buttons. (They were incredibly gracious, by the way.)
I am proud to say that all these years later, little red county where I was raised (Elkhart,IN) went overwhelmingly for Senator Obama in the primary.
This moment is so similar to your own: oil prices off the charts, terrorist threats, and a great divide among the haves and the have-nots. In retrospect, many in this country recognize how prescient your administration was. You have stayed the course and become a beacon not just for humanity, but for humane actions.
Please, Mr. President, endorse Barack Obama. The time has come to put solar panels back on the White House, the backbone back in our Constitution and the hope and promise back in our hearts.
