Kentucky is about to show us all that it is yet another rear guard state, after West Virginia and Pennsylvania. These folks just refuse to join the rest of the country in finding leadership that can handle the tough job ahead. They want to cling to their Appalachian folkways of being isolated in the hill country. The national Gallup tracking poll is now showing Obama has a lead over Clinton of 55% to 39%. And yet, in Kentucky where they are still polling for the primary, Clinton leads by 62% to 31%. How screwy is that?
Kentucky either see something that no one else in the country sees (sometimes referred to as being delusional), or they refuse to accept what everyone else has come to believe, namely that Clinton is too much like Bush (and Bill) when we need someone more like FDR or JFK. The fundamentals of our economy, environment, healthcare, and foreign policy are so off track that the country teeters on the edge of a perfect storm. In Oregon, where the Obama crowd was upwards of 75,000, people sense that these serious times call for real change. Meanwhile, there are still a few media harpies out there who think Obama needs to placate the Appalachian crowd in order to win in November. To be honest, the media harpies still whining for Clinton need to ask them selves why 55% of the country now supports Obama, compared to the 39% who seem to agree with the mountain folk. Maybe, like at the end of WW II, we just need accept the fact that every so often, some holdouts hiding in caves on an isolated Pacific island will venture forth and proclaim their support for the emperor continues unabated. True, the folks in Appalachia are a part of this country. But we all need to recognize that they are part of the rear guard - not the future. Time to acknowledge that when a few states are so out of step with the national polls, they just don't help.
