So the Clinton campaign has come out with their fund raising figures for April. The grand total: $22 million. Now, step into the way back machine for a moment, to April 23rd, the day after the Pennsylvania primary:
Hillary Clinton has scored another double-digit victory of sorts—this one related to cash flow rather than votes.
The Clinton campaign reports that is has raised $10 million in the 24 hours since winning the Pennsylvania primary.
So, almost half of their total for the month was raised in one 24 hour period? Funny, but I'm not buying it.
The reality is, and let me be clear about this up front, there is no way for me to be certain about how much money the Clinton campaign raised on the day after Pennsylvania. But given that they only raised $22 million over the entire month, it seems a touch unlikely that they raised that much money in a 24 hour period.
Possible? Certainly. But that seems really really unlikely to me. My suspicion is that they looked at the total campaign coffers for the month, and decided to claim that those funds all came in that 24 hour period. This was part of their momentum argument, saying that they got a lot of votes, some delegates, and a sudden up swing in their fund raising. The game was different now and they were set to win.
Bullshit.
We will probably not know for sure until long after this is over and some staffer for the Clinton campaign owns up to it in a memoir. But this seems awfully suspect to me. Clever perhaps, but I'm just not buying it.
