Bush has vetoed the farm bill, which also contained some modest help for middle- and low-income Americans. Here is the link to the the NYT article
The reason he gave is that "the legislation is fiscally irresponsible". But what strikes me is that the New York Times article...
repeats several times this point of view, quoting the president and his partisans over and over again. And while it does give a little bit of space at the end to a quote from Pelosi and summarizes the contents of the bill (again, way at the bottom), the overall impression it leaves is that the bill is objectionable because it will "raise taxes".
No mention of the fact that Bush and the Republican Congress ran the budget to the ground. In my opinion, when the media quote Bush saying accusing someone else of fiscal irresponsibility, it has the moral obligation of pointing out that he's the worst offender.
I wish Pelosi, too, would stress Bush's role in the deficit, rather than just enumerating the bill's virtues.
