Wow. It what ranks as one of the most frightening warnings to men contemplating marriage, CNN ran a piece called "Why he needs a room of his own" on May 2.
In an age when men – particularly husbands – are being increasingly marginalized and denigrated as children who shave and have a driver’s license (just look at most popular TV sitcoms and advertisements, with men portrayed as the bumbling twits to their strong, intelligent wives and girlfriends), now comes the depressing news that they are also being caste as second-class citizens in their own homes.
And what are men doing in their 10-by-15 basement cells? "I have it decorated with all the sports memorabilia that my wife would not allow anywhere in the house in a million years," says inmate Brian in the CNN article. Talk about losing your identity in marriage. Let’s just hope Brian’s contribution to the monthly mortgage is proportionately adjusted to reflect his prison cell living space, and not the rest of the house he has no say in. Somehow, I don’t think so.
But don’t worry young, single men; "It's about having a ‘mantuary,’ or ‘man cave’ -- a space just for him where he can watch sports uninterrupted or play Xbox games with his buddies." coos the CNN piece.
Let’s hope Brian and other poor suckers like him also have an internet hookups and are accessing some internet divorce advice sites from their basement cells... er, "Man Caves." Living like the family dog is an arrangement that just can’t be suffered for too long, and with cautionary warnings like this CNN piece, it most likely won’t be entered at all by today’s astute young single men.
