The donor ticker at Obama's website is hovering at 1,490,467. The campaign is stumping for 1,500,000 donors by May 6.
While each election this season has felt like the endgame, we know that this one really could change the game altogether--and knock Hillary Clinton out.
Just think of the support we marshaled for Ben Chandler. What if we made one final fundraising push for Barack Obama going into the IN and NC primaries?
[updated 11:42 AM CST] See my info for donors and the comments below--Wee Mama and BDsTrinity AND royce will be donating a dollar for every first-time donor who posts below (up to a hundred bucks each), so if you can, please donate and let us know! Rec this up, folks!
If we can help put him over the top, then Obama would have one more amazing statistic to share with superdelegates if Hillary Clinton pulls off a win tomorrow. If Obama wins, and his strategists can tell the media that at least 1,500,000 folks have contributed to this campaign, it will help him deliver a knockout blow going before the next round of primaries.
If you haven't donated to Barack Obama's campaign, do it now. It doesn't matter if it's $5 or $500. It's really true. What matters is that you stand up and let your name be counted among the many calling for change.
I know many of us are already on that ticker--many of us have already given the max that we can, either because we're at the FEC limit or because we're struggling ourselves. But all of us have friends, and if your friends are anything like I was before this race, most of them have probably never indulged the idea of donating to a political campaign.
I hate asking people for money. But now is the time to do so. Send an email. Tell your coworkers. Call that parent or aunt you have who's been sympathetic to Obama. Post it on Facebook, on MySpace, on your blog. Now is the time to swallow your pride and ask for money. Send them to donate.barackobama.com.
When you phonebank, tell the Obama supporters you encounter that the ticker is running. When you volunteer, let folks know that even a few dollars will help move us along. If they don't do the internet, give them this form for snail mail donations.
If you have American expat friends in faraway places, tell them that they too can give.
We'll need money again during the general election, but it only gets easier once you've given that first time. As a first-time donor this primary season, I know this is true.
And remember, this isn't just about Obama. This is about every child who's never had the chance to feel the way this girl does. This is for her and for all those who are too young to give to Barack Obama and the America he represents, and for his commitment to showing us that America is a place we can be proud of if we only have the courage to stand up. Let's ensure that this girl, and so many others like her, never have to look down on their dreams as we've had to do for decades now.
I'm ready to be proud of the folks in the White House for a change. Let's put our money where our mouth is and send Obama to the Oval Office.
[updated 11:43 AM CST] Wow--I had no idea how awesome I would feel just to see that one person was inspired to donate for the first time, but now Wee Mama and BDsTrinity and royce have said that they'll donate $1 for every first-time donor who comments below--up to $100! So if you're donating for the first time, please post it here! And if you've successfully gotten others to donate, please post here too--this is a great morale boost!
[updated 12:16 PM CST] I've tried pasting the donor ticker, but since it's a changing image, the code is stubborn. You can view it here or at Obama's main index.
