Two days ago, Tim Russert said that we now know who the Democratic nominee is, and "no one is going to dispute that". Two days ago, Keith Olbermann was flabbergasted when Chris Matthews gave a one-word answer "Yes" to the question of whether this is over.
The general election is here, folks, Obama is our nominee, the MSM has accepted it, the party has accepted it. So why the bloody hell are we still talking about Hillary?
The news cycle today should be about Obama's rock star reception in Congress (while she couldn't find people wanting to talk to her), his taking the fight to McCain, his endorsement from Edwards' campaign manager, Alito and Roberts being McCain's model judicial nominees (because that needs to be repeated over and over and not just fade away). About the launch of Obama's 50-state voter registration drive on Saturday.
The news cycle today, in other words, should belong to the Obama-McCain horse race.
And yet as I write this six diaries on the rec list are about Hillary and so are the top two front page stories - and you better believe that the MSM watches Kos and the rest of the net to determine what stories to report tonight.
We are the ones propping up her campaign now, guys! Why are we allowing ourselves to be played like this? We all are looking at her comments today as race-baiting, and I don't doubt they were, but I have no doubt Hillary is savvy enough to realize that they also served another purpose. That the Obama-supporting blogosphere would go nuts over them, her supporters on MyDD would be fired up by what they see as baseless accusations of racism, the whole thing would be reported on Countdown and suddenly against all odds she's relevant again.
This is not about her any more! If we would just ignore what she says she'd fade away.
So here's my call to action: if you have recommended any Hillary diary on the rec list right now, please unrecommend it. I'd appreciate recs for this one UNTIL the rec list is Clinton-free, but then this one should get pulled too (and if we can't get it down by unrec'ing it, I'll delete it). Find diaries about Obama and McCain and other important stories and rec them. Sign up for a Vote for Change voter registration event on Saturday. Donate to Obama or to the DNC or to our other great candidates. Make calls to WV or KY or OR. Do something positive for our nominee. But don't keep propping up the former opposition.
