Well, I should make that: There's no reason to call for Clinton to drop out right now. Hypocrisy, you say? Not exactly. Read on.
She's already dragged this thing out beyond a reasonable length. Now, what do we have?
- Michigan and Florida should be settled by May 31.
- The primaries will be over by June 3.
- Obama's about to get hammered in two Appalachian states.
- He's also about to actually go over the threshold in pledged delegates and maybe even total delegates.
- He's about to take the lead in unpledged delegates, and most of the rest of them seem to be clear that they're just waiting for a) the end of the primaries or b) Obama to take the majority of pledged delegates.
Come June 4, then, she will have to drop out or be forced out. Until then, as long as she doesn't do anything destructive to the party, I think he can handle a few weeks of coasting as a true front-runner. The psychological benefit of letting Clinton finish this on "her" terms will pay many dividends in the fall.
