According to the WSJ (sub. required) (h/t TPM), the House has reached a deal in allowing spying on all of us.
Critical to sealing the deal was a compromise that would grant conditional immunity to telecommunications companies for assistance they provided from September 2001 through January 2007. If the companies can show a federal district court judge "substantial evidence" they received a written request from the attorney general or head of an intelligence agency stating the president authorized the surveillance and determined it to be lawful, the cases against them will be dismissed.
Update: Wow, made the Rec List. Thank you everyone!!! PLEASE CALL and voice your anger over this!!
Update2: When you call....ask to speak to the telecommunications staffer--that would be the one that handles telecommunication issues in the office, and to the chief of staff as well.
And definitely stress that you're against this FISA bill. h/t slinkerwink
Update3: Just got off the phone with Obama's campaign staff. The lady said "Sen. Obama has made several public statements, I don't know why people are calling and saying that he hasn't." I replied, "That should prove that the statements aren't public enough since we aren't aware of them. He is on TV every single day with speeches televised on every cable news channel, he better mention it repeatedly today and from now on until this outrage is stopped." PLEASE KEEP CALLING.
Update4: Link to Full Bill On Steny's site no less. Oh the irony...(h/t whitewidow)
WTF are these assholes thinking? Damn you Pelosi and Hoyer. Polls clearly show that the American people DO NOT want this to happen, yet you are doing it anyway.
Please people, call, write, express your anger.
