Last November, Barack Obama said: "If I am the Democratic nominee, I will aggressively pursue an agreement with the Republican nominee to preserve a publicly-financed general election."
Or not.
Today, in a stunning reversal, Barack Obama announced he will become the first American presidential candidate since Nixon to solely rely on private money for his White House bid.
"This decision is hypocrisy at its worst and I’m bitterly angry about it," said Craig Holman, campaign finance reform head at consumer rights group Public Citizen. Holman had worked closely with Obama on congressional ethics reform.
"The reasons Senator Obama has given are insincere." Said Holman. "The system of public financing for general elections, as opposed to primary elections, is not broken. It works. The only reason he has done this is because he can raise more money than McCain." So much for Obama's commitments.
In failing to keep yet another promise to the American people, Obama once again reveals himself as just another politician saying and doing what he has to, not what’s best for the American people.
Audacity indeed.
