Looks like Drudge has had a change of heart these past few months. Either that, or a truly uncanny sense of where the wind is blowing and simply decided to hop on for the ride.
Drudge Report keeps campaigns guessing
In the spirit of full discolsure, I have a confession to make:
I have been a closet Drudge fan for the past few months.
I kept getting the sense that he was being positive to Obama, but I was hesitant given the past smears. Yet every time a nasty smear came up about Obama, I fully expected it to be ALL over Drudge's front page only to find.... nothing.
My first real clue that something was a-changing at Drudge was when he posted the pic of Obama in the African outfit. The headline made me go, "Huh???" because he immediately said it was sent to him by a Clinton staffer. Curious, I thought.
Then, I just kept noticing the trend more and more. Fab pictures of Obama, not so Fab ones of Hillary. And on and on.
Yet I hesitated on this site to say anything. I purposefully avoid the four-letter word "Drudge" in my comments because of the hate he has generated on this site and many others. Deservedly so, I might add.
So, I kept my little addiction a secret from all of you. And for that I hope you will forgive me.
But finally, today, when I read the article linked above, I felt perhaps it was time to come out and 'fess up to my dirty little past-time: refreshing the Drudge Report.
Here are some of the things said in the article:
May 19 was a fairly typical day in the recent life of the Drudge Report.
There was a breathtaking picture of Sen. Barack Obama’s rally in Portland, Ore., framed by the words "AS FAR AS CAMERA'S EYE CAN SEE ... THE OBAMA MASS."
And there was thinly veiled mockery of two other candidates: "Clinton Sits Through Sermon About Adultery," was one headline. "State GOP chair: McCain ‘kind of like Jesus,’" was another, closely followed by "McCain’s national finance co-chair exits over lobbyist ties ..."
The day, and the weeks before and since, capture what may be the most striking new feature of the 2008 media landscape. Matt Drudge has upended the conventional wisdom that he and his powerful online vehicle are stalwarts of the conservative message machine.
After skewering Al Gore and lampooning John Kerry, he’s emerged as an unreliable ally for the GOP, while trumpeting Obama’s victories and shrugging at his scandals.
And here's the real kicker, and perhaps some vindication for me and my dirty little habit of late:
"It’s clear to us that Barack Obama has won the Drudge Primary, and it's one of the most important primaries in this process," conceded a senior aide to Hillary Rodham Clinton, who also acknowledged that Drudge’s treatment of Obama could make the Illinois senator more electable in November.
So, am I the only one? Am I forgiven? Will I be banned for such an admission? I surely hope not, because I truly love you guys more than Drudge. But I can't help but like him a little more lately...
