Would it be possible to flip Texas back to Blue?
I live here, and I know it reliably sent its electoral college votes to the DEMOCRATIC nominee for President for the lion's majority of its history. It voted BLUE through the 1960's. It voted for Carter in 1976.
What would it take to turn Texas blue in 2008?
Ok, So I know this is something of a pipe dream, but stranger things have happened this election, with grassroots playing a true role in this thing these days.
According to the 2008-2009 Texas Almanac, there should be at least 17,033,000 voters in Texas available to go to the polls this year.
In 2004, Texans voted thus for the Presidential contenders:
Bush Kerry Nader Badnarik
4,526,917 2,832,704 9,159 38,787
The difference between Kerry winning Texas (and the White House) was 1,694,213. Yes, I know. That is a helluva lot.
Still, this means that over 10 million eligible didn't vote. Half of those are not registered.
So I suppose it would take around 100,000 motivated activists to pledge to register 20 Texans to vote. Sure, they won't all vote Democratic, but turnout DOES push the needle blue. Especially if one targets the inner city men or folks along the U.S./Mexico border.
So I don't know if those target lists are being generated currently to recruit new Dem voters, but I, for one, am in. Texans, are you? If you're not a Texan, are you involved in this movement for democracy?
Get off your butt this week and actually DO something besides reading wonky stuff on the internet. This is what it really all comes down to.
