I am looking forward to the Obama presidency and huge Democratic majorities in both houses of Congress with reasonable optimism. I know Obama is a politician and I like to think we're both realists. His reality is the "classic" candidates strategy of run to your base in the primaries and then move to the center for the general election. I get it! But as an individual citizen fighting to preserve the constitution that protects me and hoping still to see justice done in respect of the crimes of the Bush administration,I have my strategies too and the main strategy I follow is to support those who stand up for what I believe in. I don't believe the wishy-washy weak me-tooism of the Democratic Party has been an effective position in opposing Bush and so my "realism" is to pragmatically support those who demonstrate a willingness to fight for what's right, not expedient.
In that context, I support people like Wexler, Feingold, Kucinich, et al. I supported Obama with 12 contributions during the battle against the Clintons, primarily in hopes of eradicating the pernicious influence of DLC-Democrats on our body politic and to that end I am pleased with our victory. But the events of the last few days are clear: we have the FISA flip-flop, the flag pin, and the unity effort to bring in Clinton and her henchman. I guess Carville will be respresenting Obama on Hardball soon?
So thanks Barack for beating Hillary and I'm sure you can beat McCain without my further financial support. In fact, if you can't beat McCain and the GOP at this point then you really shouldn't be President, this is a slam-dunk. I'm also not investing further emotional committment on Barack or the Dems, I'm gonna be the man from Missouri: Show Me! Until then I plan on following the late, great George Carlin's political advice and concentrate on masturbating. As Carlin said, at least at the end of that process I'm confident I'll have something to show for it!
Update: Comments remind me of how excited you'll were in November, 2006 at the great Democratic victory. We sure did stop that War Funding, restore Habeas Corpus, etc. Sorry, how could I have forgotten!
