There is nothing more to be said. You either see it or you don't. You either believe that FISA undermines the Fourth Amendment and that it should be opposed or you are able to rationalize non-opposition as no big deal or, perhaps, as part of a secret plan.
But during the Fourth Amendment's short stay of execution I am doing my part for the Obama campaign.
I still support Obama -- which is to say that I am not a complete moron or a petulant fool. I will vote for him. There is no question about that. I will work to get others to vote for him. And, I may even send him more money between now and November. But not now.
Because I think it is important that he know that I know. I know what he did. I know why he did it. And I don't approve, cannot abide, and will not chalk it up as simply another day in American politics. Because to do so would not be honest.
So I am responding to Obama's end of quarter fund drive with an empty envelope. Well, almost empty. It will have a note that says something like "Instead of a contribution I am sending this note because you were not strong enough to stand up for the Fourth Amendment." Or perhaps, "I am contributing an amount that represents your regard for the Fourth Amendment." Or maybe simply a page with four letters: FISA. I am sending it to:
Obama for America,
P.O. Box 802798,
Chicago, IL 60680
Because I think this is how I can best help the Obama campaign now. Because it is important to me and maybe important to them that they know that I know. That I don't expect perfection. That I know the difference between a great very good choice and very bad choice. But I am not a fool. I know.
