First off this is going to be a very short diary.
This past March, when Texas had their primary, I went to vote. I've voted before but this time it was different. I brought my two sons with me (ages 4 and 6). When we got to the voting precint (a very nice public school in the suburbs of San Antonio)my oldest son could sense the excitement and my youngest was giddy because his older brother was happy. My oldest son knows Obama from his speeches, the debates and he sat on my lap and "helped" me donate money from time to time. When we entered the building there was a long line of people voting in the Democratic primary and one person voting in the Republican primary.
More after the jump.....
As soon as we got in line all eyes turned to us, I didn't know if it had to do with the fact I brought my children, my BDU's (military uniform), or that we were the only Black people voting.
After about 5 minutes a older gentlemen walks up to me and says "You're doing double-duty today, huh?" I looked at his jacket and it was an old BDU field jacket with Colonel wings on the shoulders. I'm thinking to myself he's talking military to military. I say "Sir, I'm doing triple-duty, today." Nodding down to my two sons. He laughs and pats my shoulders and is on his way with his wife. After about 20 minutes in line we finally get to the registrant table.
My oldest yells out "We're voting for Obama!!!!" and you can hear the echo reverberate through the whole school. My youngest yells in agreement, "Yeah, Hillary lies and she's plays games, right daddy?"
At this point everyone in the building looks in our direction, usually I would be embarrassed (human nature I guess), but I raised my sons that closed mouths don't get fed.
But this my feelings are differeng; I felt a sense of Cliff Huxtable type of zen and being a proud father come over me. "Yeah, baby. She does play games."
After signing in the poll worker hands us a voting module, to use in the electronic voting machine, we move to the voting booth.
When Obama's name comes up on the screen, I picked up my youngest so he would be able to join his brother and I in the historic occassion. I told them on the count of three we will all press the the screen. One, (deep breath), two (sweaty forehead), three (they scream, probably pissing off everyone even more)....
Tonight my two sons are asleep but their Father's Dream has come true and he has tears in his eyes.....
Thank you for taking the time to read this...
