I've been a Pittsburgh Penguins fan ever since I was 4 years old. But tonight, let me waste no time in congratulating the Detroit Red Wings on a terrific finals, and a great season.
I'm so proud that the young Penguins came back in this series and proved they're a force to contend with. They will be a good team for a long time.
But the better team won the Stanley Cup this time.
I don't feel any animosity at all. This was a gallant series by both teams. No cheap shots. Just two class teams who wanted to win and played their hearts out.
I have to say, Detroit's quickness in setting up offensive chances from almost any scenario is astounding. And I admire the way they never let you take anything for granted. If you're on the power play, they won't let you have any space; they'll challenge you. Even if it's 5-on-3.
I think the guy that impressed me most in this series was Henrik Zetterberg. I hadn't seen him play much, but man, can he create the chances. Osgood was great, Holmstrom was a presence as always, and Datsyuk and Draper and all the rest just added up to an unstoppable force.
The Penguins' Crosby, Malkin, Fleury, and others are still young. We will be back!
But it's your night, Detroit. Congratulations, and no hard feelings. You deserve it. Enjoy that Cup.
And hey, I got the Democratic candidate I voted for, so things are looking up already.
