The Supreme Court is much more than 9 old people in a dress sitting on a "bench." The Supreme Court is THE most powerful institution under our constitution. The Congress and the Executive Branch must abide by the rules. The Next President in 4 to 8 years will appoint around 3 or more Supreme Court justices.
It is with the utmost urgency that we must make sure that Barack Obama wins the Presidency for that reason and no other. Barack Obama could flip flop and say he wants to keep my family in Iraq for 100 years and I would still vote for him to keep the Supreme Court out of the hands of the Republican party.
First the main misunderstanding I hear about the Supreme Court is that if there is a Democratic majority in the Congress, that John McCain wouldn't be able to appoint Conservative Justices. This is incorrect, the President may appoint Justices when Congress goes into recess. This would allow John McCain to appoint any American to the Supreme Court without Congressional approval for up to a year.
Many people don't realize what is at stake over the next few years. The Makeup of the Supreme Court will be decided for the next 20 years. In those 20 years a Conservative President with the help of a Reich Wing court could entirely dismantle the New Deal programs and the success from Lyndon Johnson's Great Society.
Imagine everything your forbears worked for. Civil Rights, Women's Rights, Gay Rights, Union Rights, Rights for the Poor, Rights for Veterans. All of these could be overturned one after the other.
Here is where I step up on the soap box. I can really care about 1 half of a Russian rubble what your big issue is. I don't care if you want a President who stands up for what they believe in all the time. The facts on the ground are we can either elect a guy we agree with maybe 50% of the time or we can elect a guy who would like to see us run into the ground.
Now this is my first Diary but I've been a fan of Dailykos for awhile now. I'm not too worried about making the rec list, I just want everyone to pass on the important information about the Supreme Court, I'm sure someone will be able to put it in a much better way than I did.
