As much as the Fox TV show "24" is labeled as a conservative show making the case for torture and treatment of the terrorist threat in the 21st century it is a good show to suspend the imagination (at least for a while) that one man can save the world in a day. One tag I see on my Cleveland Browns fan site says it best about 24: "If people listen to Jack Bauer 24 would be reduced to 12."
Maybe that's why I think the writers of the series must be sitting back thinking they may have helped along history by casting Dennis Haysbert (currently of CBS "The Unit") as the presidential candidate, and later POTUS. The couldn't see by doing this casting back then would help the nation ease into the possibility of someone of color (or gender) to be the leader of the free world.
"If anything, my portrayal of David Palmer, I think, may have helped open the eyes of the American people," said the actor, who has contributed $2,300 to the Illinois Democrat's presidential campaign.
For both Brenda and I who watch the show religiously we love the years where he is a central figure of the plot to save the world before bedtime. We also love the fact that Jack Bauer risked his family, his life, and his career for the sake that a President Palmer can become a reality irregardless of his skin color or his background. Bauer saw the decency and the integrity which rang true to his character and would risk everything to make sure his vision for America would stay in place despite the many threats against him.
I was pleased to know that Haysbert is supporting Sen. Barack Obama; I have to think in the same way Martin Luther King Jr. hailed Nichelle Nichols of her portrayal of Lt. Uhura Sen. Obama will one day tip his hat in the direction of the people behind "24" and Mr. Haysbert for even making an introduction to a POTUS of color to become a reality.
