This week McCain got hammered by a Vietnam Veteran for his voting record on Disabled Veteran issues. McCain reacted angrily, saying he had a perfect record. What was referred to was McCain’s voting record as compiled by DAV - Disabled American Veterans (DAV), a very conservative group.
When you look at the voting records you find that those who supported the War in Iraq have a very bad record, and those who were against the war have a very good record. The following is a summary of the voting records of a few politicians (the higher the percentage, the better support they are giving our disabled veterans):
Senator Boxer (D) 96%
Senator Obama (D) 93%
Senator Feinstein (D) 89%
Senator Brownback (R) 39%
Senator Lott (R) 36%
Senator McCain (R) 31%
Representative Filner (D) 100%
Representative Pelosi (D) 93%
Representative Waters (D) 88%
Representative Murtha (D) 69%
Representative Bono (R) 33%
Representative Hunter (R) 23%
Representative Issa (R) 17%
After seeing Body of War, the documentary by Phil Donahue, I decided to compile the complete list of all those who voted for and against the war. I need your help to do this!
I need your help to get the voting records of all the Representatives and Senators. I will turn this into a mini documentary on Who Really Supports the Troops.
Here's how you can help:
Go to the home page of www.dav.org, then click on the Legislation drop down menu, and select the "legislative action center" link.
About half way down the page, there is a place to enter your zip code.
It will display the voting record for your two senators and your representative on issues that affect Disabled Veterans.
You have to count the total number of votes they cast and the number where they got a red "X" (which means they voted against the vets). Divide the number of red "X"s by the total number of votes, and you get his percentage. (the formula is 1-(x/y) where x is the number of red Xs and y is the total number of votes).
For instance, Darrell Issa (recent two-time winner of Keith Olbermann's Worst person in the world), now he stands at 16.6% (he voted against veterans 10 out of 12 votes).
By contact, if you put in a zip code for San Diego Congressman Bob Filner (Chairman of the House Committee on Veterans Affairs), he currently gets 100%.
Rep. Duncan Hunter currently stands at 23%.
Put in your zip code, and post the results here, in the following format:
Senator (last name) of (state) (R or D or I): X%
or
Representative (last name) of (state and closest large city) (R or D or I): X%
