This needs to be the Democratic party's rallying, angering cry. Let it ring from the dry farms of the bankrupt farmers to the foreclosed houses in the Midwest to the waitress's miserable bungalow in Malibu. The GOP: What have they done for you?
They have brought you nothing but absolute misery for eight years.
The wealthiest people in this country have held a vacuum cleaner to the pockets of the poorest for eight years. Tax cut after tax cut after tax cut for the super rich, and break after break after break for businesses who whine and cry about government meddling when it comes to where they think is okay to dump their toxic waste, but run sobbing to the Fed's apron when their sloppy business practices have the intended consequences.
I ask you, middle class and poor, what have they done for you? You will never be rich. Are you willing to sacrifice your dignity and well-being for the one in a billion shot that you'll become one of the elite? To suck up to yet another CEO, thinking he'll just shower you with cash?
The religious right has hijacked everything that makes this country beautiful. Creativity is crushed by ridiculous censorship. High school kids are punished for reading books that have words their parents utter on a daily basis. Fact after fact about abortion is swallowed in the overly-emotional rhetoric that is nothing more than proselytizing from an America-sized pulpit. Jehovah's Witnesses can come to your door on a Saturday morning and tell you you're going to hell unless you convert, but a girl wears a burka to school and everyone screams bloody murder. And yet, despite all their ballyhoo about gay marriage, like every other social movement in this country, the feverish opposition coincided with a move forward. These same people shrieked about the Armageddon of race-blind water fountains and schools fifty years ago.
I ask you, religious and non-religious alike. what have they done for you? Do you think more people have decided to change their faith to yours recently? Belief is private and highly individualized. What if tomorrow the majority belief in this country was something other than yours? Is your life better because a girl in South Dakota can't get an abortion? Is your kid smarter and happier because he's never seen the word "fuck" in print? Are your friends better people because they're all Protestants?
We're fighting a battle with the Earth, and we can't possibly win. This is the only home we have. We can't even eat the food that grows out of the ground or the fish that swim in the rivers because it's poisonous. We can't drink the water, we can't eat the meat, we can't breathe the air. It's hot, natural disasters are stronger, and the planet is in trouble.
I ask you, global climate change skeptics, what have they done for you? Is your electric bill lower because you don't believe it's getting hotter? Does it take you less time to dig your car out from that two feet of snow in the winter? Do you prefer the sun reflecting off the asphalt and the exhaust fumes on a car-clogged highway to the cool shade of the forest preserve?
What have they done for you? What the hell have the top .0001% of this country done for you to make your life better, sweeter, longer? They've taken your money, your time, and your home, and you're still going to vote them in in November because you don't want two men to kiss, you don't want your kids corrupted by dope-smoking JewishIslamoHippies, you don't want your taxes raised.
In the past eight years, more gay people have gotten married, more poor people have paid more taxes, and more children have been diagnosed with every conceivable malady than ever before. I know why the rich people in Congress are voting against your best interests, America, but I don't know why you are. Perhaps you just want to be miserable.
